If your helical curve is on the surface to be splitted, use Split Line command to split the surface. If it is not on the surface, project it onto the surface to form a curve on the surface using Projected Curve command, then use the Split Line command to split it.
The Split Line command should be found in the Insert->Curve->Split Line in the menu bar, if it is not shown on the toolbar.
SolidWorks 2003 has these commands.
